Most people are familiar with what a circuit board is along with traditional through-hole electronic components, and some people still automatically equate circuit boards with the placing of electronic components using wire leads and holes in the board. This is an older method of producing electronic components and circuit boards, and is rapidly being replaced with surface mount technology. While it may seem that SMT technology has only been around a short while, it would interest most people to know that surface mount technology has already been in use for the last twenty-five years.

Also known as SMT, surface mount technology places electronic components and fixes directly onto the circuit boards. Advances in technology have meant that SMT now allows for smaller board level components and consequently, smaller end products. Think of the size difference in early mobile phones and today's tiny cell phones, for example.

Surface mount components can be soldered using two basic techniques - using a soldering iron or using an oven. Though the process is fairly easy, it requires care and a stable hand specially when using a soldering iron. The process starts with applying a thin layer of solder paste, which is a sticky mixture of tiny solder particles and flux, to the SMT pads which are present on the PCB and are used to hold the SMT components. Then the component is placed on the pads and carefully aligned. Next, using a clean solder iron or the oven, the component needs to be tacked into place properly by soldering two opposite pins. Once in place, the alignment is rechecked and the soldering completed.

The SMT method of mounting has a number of main advantages over older methods, allowing as it does for the placement of components in exact positions on both sides of a circuit board, reducing costs and reducing size at the same time. Though cost reductions have only come over time, the initially cost of creating the machines and designs needed to undertake surface mounting are higher than the old through-hole based mounting.

Many people still suggest that the older methods of mounting components are easier to repair, but as SMT has developed enough, along with advances in the repair tools, the methods and costs of repairing surface mount boards has fallen. While it is still possible to undertake manual soldering repairs, there have been professional rework systems designed as well which have improved the method and cost of repairs.

Surface mount components now range into three main categories, Passive SMDs (including resistors and capacitors), Transistors and Integrated Circuits. There are currently still some electronic components that require the old drilled through and lead wire methods, but the numbers are on a dramatic decline.

Most people enjoy playing against other people rather than a machine because other people can provide variable, random and sometimes unpredictable responses and behaviours, whereas simply programmed machines will always respond the same way, in predictable ways that mean a player only has to remember the few basic responses possible, and respond to them in order to complete the level.

With artificially intelligent characters playing against you, it can mean that in some cases, even the game designers can't entirely predict what the computers characters will do, and each game is likely to proceed a different way, depending on those responses.

Of course some games contain artificially intelligent characters more developed than others, and certainly those characters that are simply programmed to either run left, run right or stand and shoot, depending on a random choice, don't resent much in the way of variation or intelligence. But in many cases it can become quite spooky watching characters milling about, getting on with their tasks, knowing that they are being controlled by a thinking computer. As computers become more and more advanced, and their intelligence becomes more developed, who knows what they will eventually be capable of doing.

Living Room Surround Sound Sans Wires

In the age of Wi-Fi, it's surprising wires still have to be draped across living rooms, tucked under carpets or run along walls for a quality home surround-sound setup. While wireless speaker systems exist, they haven't spread as quickly or as widely as they should have by now - largely due to high costs. But a new technology is a taking an innovative approach to eliminating excess wires.

Two new Mitsubishi television sets - the 46-inch LT-46149 and the 52-inch LT-52149 - incorporate the company's new Integrated Sound Projector (iSP) technology. The new technology builds home theater surround sound into the actual television set. In theory, this seems nearly impossible. How could a TV set sitting in front of a person replicate the experience of speakers positioned all around (even behind) the individual? iSP accomplishes this through a sixteen-speaker array that recreates true 5.1 surround sound from a cabinet below the screen. When a person takes the TV out of the box, he or she enters specific room dimensions into the set. The iSP then determines how to provide the best sound for that particular room. Through the use of an advanced algorithm, the iSP delays the sound in varying intervals to each of the 16 speakers. As a result, the speakers generate distinct sound beams that are focused both directly and indirectly to the listener. Supposedly, this practice recreates the experience of an actual surround-sound system.

With iSP technology being so new (sets just hit retailers in mid-July), there's not much feedback yet on how well the sets reproduce the surround-sound experience. But the idea behind the technology certainly is a good one. Of course, the major benefit of iSP is the elimination of all those pesky wires associated with traditional surround-sound systems. Running wires either requires some diligent cover-up work or accepting a living-room eyesore in exchange for theater-quality audio. But, should it work effectively, iSP could eliminate the need to have a receiver and speakers altogether. That, in turn, also eliminates an extra remote - a great benefit at a time when TV-viewing rooms seem to be jam-packed with more remotes than most users can actually keep track of. The sets also could be ideal for use in smaller or oddly shaped rooms like bedrooms, basements or attics, where surround-sound setups aren't entirely practical.

Though the Mitsubishi sets come with a hefty price tag, the eradication of wires and other benefits should immediately put this set in consideration for any serious videophile purchasing a new TV. Additionally, the LCD flat-panel sets with iSP also are equipped with a number of advanced video features. Mitsubishi boasts that 120Hz film motion allows for smooth, crisp, fast and slow action content. And Mitsubishi's Tru1080p delivers over two million pixels to a screen for a full and true 1920 x 1080 resolution. Meanwhile, Mitsubishi Plush1080p technology reformats 720p and 1080i signals for a sharper, clearer picture. And, when not watching TV, consumers also can turn the Mitsubishi sets into a works of art with GalleryPlayer - software that enables display of stunning high-definition art and photography. But even a Picasso pales in comparison to the notion of wireless surround sound.
